The World Needs Your Voice
Your greatest strengths are both your superpower and your biggest weaknesses.
Think of any superhero. They have a great power that comes from somewhere, which then also gets them in trouble with the bad guy.
I don’t even need to name specific ones. It’s always the same story arc.
Superheroes, before they are superheroes (or shortly after), go through something traumatic that causes them to want to keep others from going through that same pain.
They then get power(s). Then they make it their mission to help others.
That deep-seated empathy and sense of fairness causes them to get into situations where their empathy is used against them by the villain.
As humans, our greatest strengths have the potential to be our biggest weaknesses.
If you find yourself gravitating towards educating others, you won’t want to post and share it online because it feels ‘salesy’.
You never wanted to be a salesperson. You don’t see yourself as a salesperson. You are someone who cares about others, wants to help them in whatever way you can, and leaves them better than you found them. You want to coach, train, mentor, and guide.
But definitely not ‘sell’.
I know this from firsthand experience. I wrote a book about it. It is even the fundamentals of my own mission statement:
To facilitate transformation by enabling light bulb moments, helping the underdog win their game, and leaving people better than I found them.
Nothing about sales. Just about helping.
I spoke with a broker recently who loves educating, training, teaching, and helping. But hesitates in creating more online content. She didn’t say it, but I have seen it before – that hesitation can come from a desire to avoid being self-promotional. Doing marketing. Trying to sell people.
That desire to help people – but from a sales-avoidance perspective – can keep someone from wanting to come across as salesy or promotional.
But that is what the world really needs. For you to continue to be selfless in your desire to help people and not let it get in your way/head about putting out more and more content.
The world needs your education, your wisdom, the lessons from the scars you earned in battles, and your mentorship.
And truly, that is what needs to be out there in the digital landscape. See it as your mission to drown out the salesy, slick, used car brokers out there.
Make it your goal to keep business owners from selecting the wrong broker when you know that you are the right broker to help them. Use that as your drive to create, promote, and push in conversations. You need to use your superpowers to help prevent people from getting harmed by the bad guys out there.
I realized that years ago, when I shifted from order taker mode (raised by parents who still hate ‘salespeople’…but honestly…does anyone like slick, slimy salespeople?) to a confident sales professional.
I understand that if I didn’t sell someone, I was actually sending them back out to the world to:
a) get sold by someone whose intentions were good, like mine
or
b) they do nothing and spiral into a worse fate – that I could have helped them avoid.
That is your mission as well.
Don’t hold back on your content. Find a way to make your voice and message louder and louder. You owe it to business owners and the world.
Until next time,
Jason
