You Don’t Need More Effort. You Need More Leverage.

Talk about systems, media assets, referral architecture, repeatable authority outputs.

The two current books I recommend to small business owners right now are:

Who Not How by Dan Sullivan and Buy Back Your Time by Dan Martell

(Interesting trend that both were written by a Dan? Do Dans care more about time/leverage? I am going to refer to them as DS and DM moving forward).

Anyway… the core problem that both solve is effort limitations. There is so much that one person can do.

As DS discusses, even if you charge a high hourly rate – your income level is still capped by the number of hours in a day/week/month. Yes – that number could be very high, but there is a ceiling.

If you try to do everything, there is a cap on results.

One person can do only so much. Even during a focused short-term sprint (weeks/months), there is still a limit.

This Is Where Getting Help Is Key

This is where getting help is key. In DM’s world, it’s about ‘buying back your time’ to allow yourself to do more. More work. More revenue-producing activities. More of other stuff you would rather do.

It can be a scary step to get help. For some, it’s giving up control. For others, it’s not knowing how to give someone tasks or keep them busy enough. For many, it’s the money math that holds them back.

The Money Math

For that last part, it’s simple – use DM’s formula. Take your hourly rate, divide by 4. If you can get someone to do tasks for you at that 1/4th hourly rate – especially if that task would have taken you the same hour, it’s a no-brainer decision.

$100k a year is about $50/hour. 1/4th would be around $12/hour.

That gives you the money math leverage to know it will work out in your favor.

Start Small

With the other scary parts, here is the key – just get started. Begin small, with someone who can help with some tasks you know you shouldn’t be doing.

In the past, before building out our team, I was a constant user of Fiverr and Upwork when I needed a specialist for a short-term task. (I have also hired people from there for tasks that evolved into more full-time team members.)

Need a logo designed? Go in there, find three Fivers that you like with good rates. Hire all three. Yes – that will cost 3x what it could have…but you don’t know which one will create the logo you want. This way you end up with a really good chance at a logo you will love (especially since you can ask for revisions) and you have vetted someone that you can use again.

Need a PDF designed, with graphics?

Need a Canva template made?

Need some copywriting done for an email campaign?

Need a CRM set up?

You can always find someone who would be happy to help.

What Gets In The Way

As I mentioned earlier, part of what I see get in the way of business brokers (and so many solo practitioners in other industries – like coaches and consultants) of creating leverage is that a) they don’t know where to find help, b) don’t know how to assign projects and create steps someone can follow, and/or c) are worried about the cost.

I am sure you already know the tasks that you are doing that you know you shouldn’t be, as well as the tasks you aren’t doing that you know need to get done but you don’t want to do.

Start with those.

Make a list of them all, sort the list by priority of value to your business – both short and long term.

Solve for what will help you right now but also ensure you are making future you grateful to current you by getting vital things built now (the ‘farming’ strategies I have mentioned).

One Step At A Time

Once you have that list, get to work – bit by bit.

Remember, no one jumps up a mountain. We all get there the same way with one foot in front of the other.

Take a few steps today to get up your business building mountain.

If you want help to determine where to start, you want specific tips for finding help or providing instructions for people to follow, or want to explore how our done-for-you services could resolve a lot of your marketing task list, reach out to me.

There are only so many hours in a day, so make the most of them by creating leverage.

A friend of mine told me once – do what only you can do.

From there, delegate the rest.
